What We’re Reading This Week!
Jenn says: I’ve been looking forward to Jesmyn Ward’s memoir, Men We Reaped (out September 17), since I first heard she was writing it — and it does not disappoint. All that raw feeling that was so present in Salvage the Bones is here, and more. It’s a rough topic; she’s remembering the deaths of five young men, one of them her younger brother, and contemplating the intense damage that racial and economic inequality do to young black people in the South. Rough, and important, and if you consider yourself a political being at all, you need to read this book.
On much lighter notes, I’m in the middle of Cress by Marissa Meyer and Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey. Cress is the third volume of the Lunar Chronicles, or as i like to call them it Fairytales in Spaaaaaaace series, and it’s not out until February 2014 but that just means you have lots and lots of time to go read Cinder and Scarlet first! So. Much. Fun. Cinder(ella) is a cyborg, Scarlet (Little Red Riding Hood) is the granddaughter of a secret French agent, and Cress (Rapunzel) is a rogue hacker. SEE, FUN! And the Carey book is part of a big reread Preeti and I are doing for Book Riot — I’m a little ahead and trying to slow down, but I forget how good at plotting Carey is and then next thing you know I’ve read six chapters.
